The Mission of the East End Seaport Museum and Marine Foundation is to recognize, restore and preserve the maritime heritage of the East End of Long Island, New York.

Their ongoing activities include the operation and maintenance of the Maritime Museum and Blacksmith shop in Greenport, the maintenance of the Long Beach Bar (Bug) Light, a lecture series, children summer programs, annual cruises, and various other maritime related exhibits

Fund raising activities include a Maritime Festival, Lighthouse and other cruises, an annual Bug Light Swim and overnights at the Bug Light are also available.

The Maritime Museum is located in the the old train station at 3rd St., adjacent to the Shelter Island North Ferry Dock. Inside, the museum boasts an array of exhibits on the maritime heritage of the area, including displays on the menhaden fishing industry, the oyster industry, lighthouse lenses, model ships of the USS Ohio and the USS Holland, a submarine mock-up, and more. Among the more popular exhibits at the museum are the Fresnel lenses. The lens served at the Little Gull Island lighthouse from 1869 until 1995.

The "Bug Light" lighthouse, first lit on December 1, 1871, was built upon a screwpile foundation. This metal framework foundation, as seen in the old postcard images available at the shop, made the light look like a large bug upon the water, hence the "Bug Light" nickname.

Each Spring, the Foundation has a "Clean-up the Bug Light day" which provides a wonderful opportunity for both young and old to spend the day helping to clean up this lighthouse treasure.
