My artwork is a combination of scientific study, philosophy and social critique. At its core is a constant examination of human existence. I am fascinated by the world around me and why things are the way they are. I view human society as a living system. I see our society in much the same way as, say, a colony of microbes; each individual organism is alive, yet also functions as part of a much larger collective entity.
Anatomical masses are often used as central images in my work to present this idea of society as a living organism and also to relate to human physicality. My style is very linear and has a strong emphasis on drawing. I usually create an image through overlapping semi-transparent layers, slowly building complexity.
My influences come from a broad range of topics including: evolution, time, chaos, cosmology, anatomy, scientific and medical diagrams, systems, and lifecycles. I am attracted to the tension that is created through contrasting ideas: microcosms & macrocosms, growth & decay, beauty & the grotesque. Additionally, I am very interested in states of being, consciousness and the human mind.
I view my artwork as a biopsy of contemporary society. I try to objectively interpret the world and then dissect it. My approach is very scientific, including extensive research which is translated into visual stimulus. I am constantly processing information and integrating new ideas within my work. My artwork is the product of my relentless drive to investigate and understand this world.
