The deer in the Sunken Forest are calm around people - allowing you to stand just a few feet away from them and stare. The forest was one of the most unique things I've seen on Long Island. Its much cooler in the shade - a cool chill in the summer heat. The nature trail is a 1.5 mile long boardwalk that winds through stunted trees, marshland and dunes. The 200-300 year old forest exists in a very uncommon environment; trees are unable to grow due to a salt spray above the dune line.
One of the more common trees in the Sunken Forest, Sassafras has a twisting trunk that helps give the forest its unique appearance. The forest is home to yellow-bellied sapsuckers, gray catbirds, black-capped chickadee, eastern towhee, fishcrow and many more. With over 300 species recorded, Fire Island is one of the top places on Long Island to go bird watching. Other creatures that can be spotted are white tail deer, red fox, box turtles, squirres, weasels and rabbits.
