While other nightspots come and go, The Donkey has been standing strong for over 5 years now. It's not hard to tell that people love this place, as you drive down 110 by the airport and see the outside deck bustling, even in winter, as the radiant warmth coming from the packed house inside makes things fairly toasty for smokers year-round.
The layout inside is simple, a big stage , a couple of nice bars and the dance floor. Technically, it looks like a sports bar, but few people are there for the games. The club is in Nassau, but lies directly on the county border, so Suffolk represents as well as Nassau, plus it's close enough to Queens to draw from the boroughs too. They all come to hear the bands rock the house, mostly cover bands but occasionally some signed acts pass through as well. They also come for the DJ's, who have absolutely mastered the "party" style. Some house, some classics, some pop, some hip-hop -- all pounding and pumping up the crowd.
It's not a dressy lounge, so casual-but-neat is the acceptable dress. However, if you show up schleppy, you probably won't be making it past the doorman. This does pay off, as you end up with a clean-cut crowd that still gets wild, and the bar won't slam you financially, so put on something decent and make the scene.
