As one of the most calm rivers on Long Island, the Carmans River is great for a relaxing afternoon adventure. You can launch from the upper or lower portion of the river, which runs about nine miles long from the center of Long Island down to the Great South Bay in Brookhaven.
Launching from the lower river can last anywhere from 1.5 hours up to 6 hours. You will paddle through the Wertheim Refuge where you can see marshland and forest as well as some inhabitants such as fish, turtles, swans, ducks and birds. You can stop at Indian Landing Nature Trail or go fishing in this part of the river. Don't go too far, you have to paddle back to where you launched from.
The upper river, which runs through South Haven Park, holds a little more adventure. A shuttle will take you to the head of the river and should take approximately 1.5 to 3 hours to get the landing dock. You will need to get out of the boat twice in your journey to move your canoe around two small dams. Also, you will go over a small waterfall. For the upper river course, a basic paddling knowledge is recommended.
Glacier Bay Sports offers easy rentals of canoes and kayaks and have over 100 boats in stock. They are also one of the largest kayak shops on Long Island.
